We've been studying our past presidents over the last few weeks. We each picked a president, researched each by reading biographies and websites, and wrote paragraphs telling a little about how each president affected our lives today. We observed how change over time happened through photographs and daily life routines. Many presidents were in office before photographs existed, so their pictures are actually paintings. Other presidents have photographs, but they are only in black and white. One of our presidents received a speeding ticket for riding his horse too fast! We also looked at how science and technology have changed daily life, such as photographs, ways presidents communicated with others, and so on. We took the information we learned and sequenced our presidents, joining forces with Mrs. Lance's class to create a gigantic timeline in our hallway! Here are a few pictures to show our hard work! What are some other ways you can think of that show how change has happened over time in our daily lives? Give an example of how science and technology changed our daily lives.

During our Map Study, we made maps of our classroom! We broke up into groups and planned what was important to include on our maps. We tried to make them different from the other group maps. It was messy but awesome, and it was our favorite project so far in Second Grade! Map #1: IC, JN, ET Some unique things we included on our map are our hand sanitizer dispenser, the chips on our desk, the flag, and a scale. We learned that the title is important, we have to look around us to know what to make, and we don't have to rush. Details are important! Map #2: JR, LR, JBW Some unique things we included on our map are the cubbies, the flag and the job wheel. We learned that a map always needs a compass rose, and in our classroom, North always points towards the windows. We also learned that maps are very helpful! It would be hard to live in our world without maps! Map #3: MC, RC, GT, JT We included the bookshelf, mailboxes and Ms. Young's table. We learned that making maps is hard work, but maps are easy to read if they are colored and have labels. Maps help tell us where to go! Map #4 EN, MN, GP, CW We included the computer cart, the smartboard and the door. We also made our map 3D! We learned that it is hard to work in groups and you have to divide work between everyone. We also learned that maps should be neat so they are easy to read. Map #5 AC, CG, BP, BW Our map includes the cubbies, blue tables and chairs with tennis balls on the bottoms. We learned that making maps takes hard work, and it can be gluey! Map #6 HH, AM, BM, JDW Our map includes the calendar, the computer cart, chips on our desks and the watering can. We also added the centers and mailboxes. We learned that it is important to put things in the right place on a map so people can find their way. It is also important to have maps because people use maps every day. Have you ever tried to make a map before? What was the hardest part for you?
This was the busiest week we have had this year, jam-packed with activities and events! We started off the week with an assembly about Indian dance and culture, and we even got to participate in some dances! One highlight was when Ms. Young was dressed in a sari. On Tuesday, we watched the Third Grade music concert, and they did a great job! On Wednesday we had the Author visit from Dr. Paul Michael Mullen. Finally, on Friday, we had our Cultural Heritage Parade!! Thank you to all who came out to see our awesome floats!! Here are some pictures from the week! Last week we started talking about our own cultural heritages. We interviewed our families to find out where our ancestors came from. We plotted all the places our ancestors came from on a Google map, that you can see below. Please note, the points do not mark specific places our ancestors are from, just the countries in general! Also, in some cases, we knew the continent (like Africa) but not the country, so the marks are just for the continent. Scroll around to look all over the world to see our Cultural Heritage! View Cultural Heritage of our Class in a larger map This week we held our first annual Second Grade Market Day with Mrs. Lance's class! Students picked goods or services to provide and worked for several to produce these goods before the Market Day. They made plans for how they would make the good or service, set a fair price and made advertisements. Throughout the week, students also earned "Cowboy Bucks" with their behavior chips to spend on Market Day. On Wednesday, we set up "Young Market," and Mrs. Lance's class came to shop! Our class then went nextdoor to "Lance Market" to spend our own money for specialty goods and services. After final sales, we discussed what was successful and what we could have done differently to make our products sell better. We've been learning about Urban, Rural and Suburban communities in Social Studies. We made murals of three different regions (mountain area, plains, and near water) and incorporated all three types of communities into the regions. They turned out great! We've been talking about families and why our families are special to us and make us feel secure. After reading The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy, we brainstormed things that are special or unique about our individual families and made quilts illustrating this. We brought all our individual quilts together as patches for a giant class quilt. :) We had so much fun with this project! Have a Happy Thanksgiving with your families!!
We made our Landforms VoiceThread this week! We made models of different landforms or bodies of water using homemade playdough. After they dried, we painted them to make them look more realistic. After that, we took pictures of the models and created a slideshow on a website called VoiceThread. Once the slideshow was created, we were able to record our voices talking about each landform or body of water! Click to check out our Landforms VoiceThread!
